Our Story
Hi! My love for design has been with me from the start. Growing up in Asia in the 80s, surrounded by my dad’s work in the shoe industry, I was always intrigued by product design. I was also the kid who loved dressing up, and making my own outfits, often hearing, “Sara, this isn’t a fashion show!” But for me, every moment was an opportunity to express myself and have fun. My very first word was “Flower,” which kind of says it all—nature’s beauty and color have always inspired me.
Salvage began while I was in grad school thinking about the intersection of sustainability and art. I loved the idea of “salvaging”—making the most out of what you have and finding creativity in unexpected places. That mindset has stayed with me throughout my work, and it probably runs in my family. With quilters, wood carvers, calligraphers, and painters around me growing up, I guess the love for color and craft was inevitable!
Over the last 30 years, I’ve been collecting vintage fabrics, scarves, and other printed items—pieces that speak to me with their color or movement or graphic quality. My collection spans from the 40s to the 80s, with a soft spot for bold florals and abstract designs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
It’s a joy to get to contribute to this industry that brings so much inspiration and happiness to so many people - as we design, as we shop and as we dress.
Along with loving what I do, I love the beauty of nature, animals, the energy of city life and the discovery of new cultures—these are the things that fuel my creativity. Sunshine and a good
adventure keep me inspired.
Cheers and Thanks for visiting,
Sara
